Pyritized Ammonite

An exceptional pyritized ammonite from the Jurassic Period found in the Ryazan region in western Russia. This ammonite fossil has incredible pyrite druzy inside the pyritized growth chambers. The back of this piece even has a soft pink iridescence. Ammonites are an extinct variety of sea creatures that swam the shallow seas millions of years ago. As the shell part fossilizes, it is naturally replaced by the mineral pyrite, creating the incredible lustrous golden colorations seen here. What is incredible about these pieces, is part of the shell naturally dissolved away, exposing the amazing pyritized growth chambers inside. The top of this specimen has been lightly polished.

Approx. 1.3" L x .25" W x 1.2" H
