Is it an icicle or selenite crystal? This transparent window of crystalline selenite comes from Mexico. Selenite is actually formed as a result of evaporation! Mineral-rich water will settle into a pool or dip in the Earth's surface and evaporate, leaving the concentrated minerals behind to crystallize. The name 'selenite' is mostly synonymous with gypsum but has been used historically to describe the transparent variety like this beauty here. In fact, selenite crystals of this clarity were once used in homes as windows!
Selenite is one of the softer minerals in the spectrum, with a Mohs Scale hardness level of 2. This is one of the most important identifying characteristic of selenite/gypsum, as any variety can be scratched with a fingernail. Interestingly, because gypsum has natural thermal insulating properties all varieties feel warm to the touch.
Approx. 6.5" H x 1" W x 2.75" L
