This large ammonite fossil plate comes from the Holzmaden Shale formation in Germany. Ammonites are an extinct group of sea creatures which thrived during the Jurassic Period approximately 180 million years ago. This plate has two types of ammonites, the large being a Harpoceras, and the smaller being Dactylioceras. The ammonites have mineralized with a pyrite coating giving it a rich brass color which contrasts nicely against the deep shale background. Fossil plates like this beautiful specimen would make a unique addition to your home or office decor.
