Layers of hidden and exposed pyritized ammonites on this amazing fossil plate from the famous Posidonia Shale near Holzmaden, Germany. Ammonites are an extinct group of sea creatures which thrived during the Jurassic Period approximately 180 million years ago. This plate has many ammonites of the species Dactylioceras. The ammonites have mineralized with a pyrite coating giving it a rich brass color which contrasts beautifully against the deep shale background.
Approx. 5.75" L x .5" W x 4.75" H
