Fossil Fern
Add a Matching Display Stand
A truly fabulous fossilized Fern from France! This detailed specimen of Pecopteris saraefolia comes from the Carboniferous Period approximately 300 million years ago. While it's more common to see fossils of harder items like shells and bones preserved, under the right geologic circumstances, soft tissued organisms like plants can be preserved too!
Through rapid burial in a low-oxygen swamp-like environment, these ferns were preserved through a process called carbonization. This leaves behind a thin, dark gray-black layer of carbon, perfectly imprinted from the fern.
