Grape Agate / Chalcedony

Like holding a crystalline cluster of grapes in your hand! They may not be actual grapes... but this wild mineral specimen forms in a unique botryoidal shape, which translates to minerals that look like a "bunch of grapes” clustered together.

This vibrant purple crystal specimen of Grape Chalcedony comes from Indonesia and has a lovely sheen. Specimens with this glittery luster represent a more rare and higher quality crystal than other Grape Chalcedony on the market. Despite its trade name of "Grape Agate", this purple powerhouse is actually Chalcedony.

Agate and Chalcedony are both in the Quartz family, and both are microcrystalline quartz. However, a chemical analysis showed that the composition is more Chalcedonic Quartz, or considered "Grape Chalcedony".

The Grape Chalcedony forms within andesite pillow lava. It is believed that when the lava interacted with the islands cold seawater, it rapidly cooled leaving voids between pillows. It is within these pillow spaces of the host rock that the Chalcedony eventually formed!

Approx. 3.5" H x 3" W x 2" Deep
