Ammonite Nodule Pair

A rock with a surprise inside...While it may not look like much from the outside, the inside holds an ancient Dactylioceras Ammonite fossil! Discovered near the town of Whitby, in Yorkshire, England, this Jurassic Period fossil is approx. 180 million years old.

These fossils formed in muds and clays that hardened around the fossil creating a nodule or concretion. When cracked open, the fossil inside is exposed along with a cast or imprint of the original shell shape. The Ammonite itself has been replaced by the mineral Pyrite, creating a slightly golden / brass sheen when tilted in the light.

The closed nodule is approx. 3.75" L x 3" H x 2.25" Deep
