Petrified Wood Slice with Double Hearts from Oregon

This incredibly detailed and unique slice of Petrified Wood has a rare feature! The wood features a formation often called a double hearts, or twin hearts, referring to the double "bullseye" shape in the tree.

Often referred to as the "heart" (pith) of the tree, the center-most ring in a typical slice of petrified wood features one central heart. This specimen features two hearts, a result of the once-living tree producing a split trunk, with two distinct trunks coming from the original base of the tree.

In the world of petrified wood, this formation is rarely seen, making this a true collectors piece. It's "twin" slice, which was cut from the same petrified log can be found here for a beautiful matching set!

The front has been polished to a high gloss finish, with the sides left in the raw and natural condition. A thin layer of fiberglass was applied to the back of the slice to ensure the stones structure and stability.

Petrified wood forms when a tree falls and is rapidly buried by sediment such as volcanic ash or river sediments. This creates a reduced oxygen environment (anaerobic) which halts the usual decay process. Minerals carried through the flow of water and absorbed into the tree slowly began to replace the organic material and crystallize. Over hundreds and thousands of years this crystallization took place hardening into stone.
