A fossil ready to take flight! This unbelievable Dragonfly fossil comes from the world famous Solnhofen Formation in Germany and is approximately 150 million years old!
Named for the small town of Solnhofen, this is one of the world’s most famous fossil deposits, located in Bavaria in Southern Germany, between Nuremberg and Munich. This incredibly detailed limestone formation called “Plattenkalk” in Germany, meaning they are fine grained and cleave relatively flat (thin slices), are a Jurassic age limestone.
The fine-grained limestone includes exceptionally well preserved soft bodied and soft tissued animals and plants, such as this stunning Dragonfly. In fact, the original Archaeopteryx fossil was discovered at this locality, providing an important geologic link between dinosaurs and birds!
If the incredible detail of the Dragonfly weren't enough, lovely dendrite formations can be seen along the perimeter of the specimen. While they may look like plants, dendrites are actually iron and manganese oxides that crystallized out of solutions on bedding planes and fractures within the Solnhofen formation. They create a fascinating border to this lovely specimen!
Approx. 8.25" L x 7.25" W x .3" D
