Olivine (Peridot) is a mineral that forms at some of the hottest temperatures inside our Earth. Extremely hot magma from deep within our Earth will rise to shallower depths and begin to cool. As it does so, vibrant green Olivine crystals are some of the first to crystallize out of this hot solution.
This piece beautifully displays the mix of Olivine crystallization inside the bubbly basalt volcanic rock matrix. Basalt itself is an important volcanic rock, as the large air and gas bubbles create the perfect pockets for later stage mineralization to occur.
The bright green crystals of Olivine (gem name Peridot) contrast perfectly with the dark gray rock matrix. This specimen was found in the volcanic deposits of the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona.
